SUMMARY:BBMRI-ERIC ELSI Dialogues Webinar: Introduction to the Belgian Biobank Legislation - A Piece of the Puzzle in the Complicated EU Regulatory Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Biobank legislation is not harmonised at the European Union level\, and the Member States have taken considerably divergent approaches in how they regulate the field. Whereas some countries do not have specific regulations\, others have adopted complex biobank laws. \nThis webinar aims to present the unique legal framework for biobanking that is currently in place in Belgium. The Belgian Biobank law was first adopted in 2008\, entered into force in 2018 and underwent an important reform in 2022. Moreover\, the law is complemented by an essential piece of self-regulation\, namely the Compendium on biobanks issued by the Federal Agency on Medicine Products and Health. The interplay with relevant data protection rules will also be the focus of our discussion. \nJoin us on 31 May at 14:00 CEST. Register online. \n\nModerator: Ilaria Colussi  \n\n\nSpeakers: Janos Meszaros\, Teodora Lalova-Spinks\, Introduction by Prof. Isabelle Huys  \n\nThis webinar has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the project canSERV – providing cutting edge cancer research services across Europe (grant agreement number 101058620). \n

SUMMARY:Ethics of AI in Imaging: Ethical and Societal Implications
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Melanie Goisauf and Mónica Cano Abadía (BBMRI-ERIC) \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) applications in medicine are hoped to improve healthcare and to advance health equity. While the technology carries the potential to improve health services\, the ethical and societal implications need to be carefully considered to avoid harmful consequences for individuals and groups\, especially for the most vulnerable. It is therefore inevitable to identify what types of ethical issues are raised by AI\, and to analyse how these issues are tackled in biomedical research. This webinar gives an overview of the results of a comprehensive and systematic review of academic literature as well as workshop outcomes. We will problematise approaches such as ‘trustworthy AI’ and ‘explainable AI’ that shape the ethics discourse on AI. The webinar concludes with a reflection on the topics identified that shape the understanding of ‘Ethics of AI’ and the gaps in the discourse.  \nRegister here: https://cesnet.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_u_wq99pSTfm7Ql3PfXdnFQ \nThis webinar is funded within BIG PICTURE\, projects that have received funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking under grant agreement No 945358.

SUMMARY:European Biobank Week Roadshow - Paediatric Biobanking and Minor Engagement - Rome\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Paediatric Biobanking and Minor Engagement – an interactive workshop\nThe second stop of our EBW22 Roadshow will be in Rome (Italy)\, 13-14 October. \nESBB and BBMRI-ERIC organise this #EBW22 Roadshow stop in partnership with the BBMRI ERIC Stakeholder Forum Patient Pillar\, BBMRI.it\, the Research Translational (IRCCS) Paediatric Bambino Gesù Hospital\, and the paediatric network IDEA. \nPaediatric (research) biobanking is a European priority asking for a scientific and Ethical-Legal-Societal-ELS shift within a Responsible Research & Innovation – RRI framework. Accordingly\, our critical starting point will be an overall view of European commitment to paediatric research and healthcare and an in-depth exchange on good practices and priorities of various actors to raise awareness\, facilitate assent and consenting processes\, and improve engagement. Promoting practical solutions\, we will address challenges of biobanking with children (earlier\, over time\, and following up)\, such as: \n\nHow empowering new generations makes better research and a better research experience?\nWhich tools to use to inform and increase the minor’s understanding?\nBy whom is the child’s capacity (to understand\, to assent) assessed?\nHow to engage minors and their parents (guardians) over time and recognize them as active research participants?\n\n\nBooking and further information\nSee the programme and register via the ESBB website today\, seats are limited! \nAs a practical recommendation: October is the high tourist season in Rome; book in advance – the sooner the better. \nYou will find the information notice specific to the data processing for the organization of the EBW Roadshow here. \nPlease also find our privacy statements here: ESBB\, BBMRI-ERIC. SUMMARY:International Conference on Biosamples and Biodata in Medical Research - ELSI Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Biosamples and biodata are crucial for current medical research and the development of personalized medicine. Biological material and associated data are an integral part of the scientific process in population studies\, research on specific diseases\, development of new drugs\, vaccines and diagnostic tools. They have also become a key element in Covid-19 research. However\, collection\, storage\, use and transfer of biosamples and biodata induce numerous ethical\, legal and social challenges. This is especially true for human samples and data. Non-human (microbiological\, animal) samples and data are also worth considering because they are playing an increasingly important role in medical research. The aim of the conference is an interdisciplinary reflection on regulatory\, normative and axiological problems related to biosamples and biodata as well as searching for best practices that respect human dignity\, fundamental rights\, legal norms\, social expectations and cultural beliefs in management of biosamples and biodata. The conference is planned to fill the gap between different perspectives on samples and data. Therefore\, we invite specialists from medical\, humanities and social areas\, as well as representatives of research institutes\, administrative entities\, patient organizations and other stakeholders. \nRead more and register here: BioData 2021

SUMMARY:Online Workshop Day 2: Participant engagement in longitudinal population studies/cohorts
DESCRIPTION:This webinar takes places over 2 days\, for 2 hours each:\nDay 1: October 12th\, 2021. 14:00-16:00h (CEST)\nDay 2: October 14th\, 2021. 14:00-16:00h (CEST)\nYou are welcome to attend either or both sessions! \n  \nDescription: Retaining several generations of participants in longitudinal cohorts and ensuring that the participants continuously contribute with new data and support data sharing\, is challenging. Participants gradually drop out\, do not respond to data collection requests\, or simply lose interest in the study. Young people\, disadvantaged socio-economic groups\, and ethnic minorities are particularly difficult to retain for a long period of time. \nParticipant engagement aims to maintain the interest of participants in the study and encourage their participation and commitment over its lifetime. European cohorts are gradually developing participant engagement strategies including innovative tools for recruitment and informed consent collection\, data collection and ongoing communication with\, and involvement of\, participants. SUMMARY:Pre-Analytical Phases of Biobanking\, Part 1: Phlebotomy
DESCRIPTION:The pre-analytical phase is crucial when handling specimen. Issues that arise even before samples arrive in the laboratory and further route to the biobank play an important role. Errors can occur during the pre-analytical phase with specimen handling and identification. Therefore\, the pre-analytical phase must have strict quality assurance and control measures in place. \nKey expert Dr. Łukasz Kozera will present in this webinar the most novel key elements of phlebotomy\, coordinated laboratory and biobanking activities including patient preparation and the science behind the pre-analytical phase; these are currently important and will play an even more important role in the future of biomedical research. Dr. Kozera will provide balanced content between the latest science and good everyday practice. \nRegister here to receive webinar details: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8402489166331653132 \nPlease send your questions\, comments and feedback to: ulrike.rohrer@bbmri-eric.eu

SUMMARY:Online Workshop Day 1: Participant engagement in longitudinal population studies/cohorts
At this digital workshop\, the strategies of key European cohorts will be presented and discussed\, and experiences exchanged. Work conducted to map participant engagement strategies in European cohorts will also be presented.
