SUMMARY:EBRAINS Workshop: The Future of Medical Data Sharing in Clinical Neurosciences
DESCRIPTION:The HBP and EBRAINS together with the EAN invite the entire scientific community to join the forthcoming workshop on the Future of Medical Data Sharing in Clinical Neurosciences. This event aims at exposing and openly discussing all issues and challenges associated with data sharing in Europe\, from ethics to data safety and privacy\, including those specific to data federation\, such as the development and validation of federated algorithms. We propose a platform to disclose the preliminary results of these use-cases\, four brainstorming sessions involving EAN Scientific Panels\, demonstrations and a hands-on session\, which will highlight important aspects and issues of medical data sharing and offer participants the possibility to understand how to use the MIP for their own applications.\nMore information here. \nRegistration deadline: 25 November 2021\nRegistration is free but mandatory.

SUMMARY:“Gendered Innovations”: The Importance of Gender in Biomedical Research
DESCRIPTION:Join BBMRI-ERIC for an exciting 2-hour webinar on gender in biomedical research\, featuring two outstanding speakers. \nPart 1) Gendered Innovations in Biomedicine \nLonda Schiebinger\nJohn L. Hinds Professor of History of Science\nDirector\, Gendered Innovations in Science\, Health & Medicine\, Engineering\, and Environment\nStanford University \nHow can we harness the creative power of sex\, gender\, and intersectional analysis for discovery and innovation? This talk will discuss this type of analysis in cells\, animal\, and human research. To match the global reach of science and technology\, Gendered Innovations was developed through a collaboration of over 200 experts from across the United States\, Europe\, Canada\, and Asia. Major funders include the European Commission\, the U.S. National Science Foundation\, and Stanford University. \nFor background\, see the following publications: \n\nAI can be Sexist and Racist—It’s Time to Make it Fair Nature\, 559.7714 (2018)\, 324-326;\nSex and Gender Analysis Improves Science and Engineering Nature\, 575.7781 (2019)\, 137-146;\nGendered Innovations 2: How Inclusive Analysis Contributes to Research and Innovation (Luxembourg: Publications Office of the European Union\, 2020)\, and\nEnsuring that Biomedical AI Benefits Diverse Populations eBioMedicine\, 103358 (2021).\n\nFor late-breaking news on research in this area\, join the Gendered Innovations listserv. \n  \nPart 2) Practical considerations for the operationalization of sex- and gender-sensitive research in biomedicine \nSabine Oertelt-Prigione\nChair of gender in primary and transmural care at the Radboud University in Nijmegen\, the Netherlands\nProfessor of sex- and gender-sensitive medicine at the University of Bielefeld\, Germany \nOnce researchers decide to focus on sex and gender in their work\, the next question is: how do you do it? What do you have to consider and how do you start? In this talk we will explore more in depth how sex and gender are currently operationalized in biomedicine. What should be measured during the experiments and what should be reported in the following scientific publication. Using several examples from different biomedical fields\, we will explore practices and formulate recommendations. \nWatch the recording here. \nFor more about ethical\, legal and societal issues in biomedical research\, visit BBMRI-ERIC ELSI Services & Research.

SUMMARY:International Conference on Biosamples and Biodata in Medical Research - ELSI Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Biosamples and biodata are crucial for current medical research and the development of personalized medicine. Biological material and associated data are an integral part of the scientific process in population studies\, research on specific diseases\, development of new drugs\, vaccines and diagnostic tools. They have also become a key element in Covid-19 research. However\, collection\, storage\, use and transfer of biosamples and biodata induce numerous ethical\, legal and social challenges. This is especially true for human samples and data. Non-human (microbiological\, animal) samples and data are also worth considering because they are playing an increasingly important role in medical research. The aim of the conference is an interdisciplinary reflection on regulatory\, normative and axiological problems related to biosamples and biodata as well as searching for best practices that respect human dignity\, fundamental rights\, legal norms\, social expectations and cultural beliefs in management of biosamples and biodata. The conference is planned to fill the gap between different perspectives on samples and data. Therefore\, we invite specialists from medical\, humanities and social areas\, as well as representatives of research institutes\, administrative entities\, patient organizations and other stakeholders. \nRead more and register here: BioData 2021

SUMMARY:Pre-Analytical Phases of Biobanking\, Part 3: Science behind the pre-analytical phase\, quality assurance schemes in biobanking
DESCRIPTION:The pre-analytical phase is crucial when handling specimen. Issues that arise even before samples arrive in the laboratory and further route to the biobank play an important role. Errors can occur during the pre-analytical phase with specimen handling and identification. Therefore\, the pre-analytical phase must have strict quality assurance and control measures in place to prevent errors and allow qualification of samples for research protocols. \nKey expert Dr. Łukasz Kozera will present in this webinar the most novel key elements of phlebotomy\, coordinated laboratory and biobanking activities including patient preparation and the science behind the pre-analytical phase; these are currently important and will play an even more important role in the future of biomedical research. Dr. Kozera will provide balanced content between the latest science and good everyday practice. \nBBMRI-ERIC is in the process of applying for CME accreditation for this programme. Information will be updated accordingly. \nRegister here to receive webinar details: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/8402489166331653132 \nPlease send your questions\, comments and feedback to: ulrike.rohrer@bbmri-eric.eu

SUMMARY:7th African Conference on One Health & Biosecurity
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic continues to demand our attention. It places a magnifying glass at our societies’ achievements and clarifies what works and does not work. It stimulated rapid responses from the scientific community for contributing to the acceleration of transnational research. It showcases\, yet again and to a global scale\, that disease does not know any boarders. Michaela Th. Mayrhofer\, BBMRI-ERIC’s Head of ELSI Services & Research\, will give a presentation that puts the focus on biobanking during pandemic times. Firstly\, it sets the scene with some examples from within the Pan-European Research Infrastructure BBMRI-ERIC and its global partners. Secondly\, it will draw conclusions as regards to the practice of biobanking\, data and sample quality\, findability of ressources and challenges for governance and the ethical\, legal and societal implications. \nRegister now for the GET Consortium’s 7th African Conference on One Health & Biosecurity here to hear this and many other valuable talks: https://www.getafrica.org/events/conference-2021/ \n
