Sweden (Member)




Biobank Sweden is the Swedish node of BBMRI-ERIC. In 2010, a national infrastructure ( supported by the Swedish Research Council and encompassing the seven medical faculties in Sweden was formed. In 2017, transitioned into the national infrastructure Biobank Sweden, encompassing the medical faculties and their corresponding health care providers (county councils) in Gothenburg, Linköping, Malmö/Lund, Stockholm, Umeå, Uppsala and Örebro.

Biobank Sweden aims to optimise the collection, storage, withdrawal and use of biobank samples and data to benefit medical research, patient care and the life science industry. Currently, around 150 million samples are stored in Swedish biobanks for health care, quality assurance and/or research purposes.

Current and planned activities focus on:

  • Strengthened national collaboration and network with the aim of creating a unified national biobank infrastructure for Sweden
  • National harmonisation of processes for consent, collection, storage and withdrawal
  • Development and implementation of nation-wide IT solutions for linking sample and patient
  • National implementation of healthcare integrated biobanking
  • Providing service on Ethical, Legal & Societal Issues (ELSI) on biobanking
  • Providing Information Technology Services for high quality data handling
