“The human body in scientific research and medical practice. A transdisciplinary approach”

BBMRI.pl has published a monograph “The human body in scientific research and medical practice. A transdisciplinary approach” edited by Jakub Pawlikowski, Polish national ELSI expert and member of ELSI team at BBMRI-ERIC. The book contains 35 chapters divided into five parts: anthropological, ethical, legal, social and practical issues. The aim of the monograph is to create a platform for dialogue between scholar from various fields of science and humanities. It is hoped that it will build bridges between science, humanities and society and will contribute to the creation of an appropriate ethical, legal and social framework for the development of biobanks and other areas of research using the human body. The content covers many ELSI issues related to the biobanks, such as: informed consent, data protection, the role of research ethics committees, commercialization, ownership and social attitudes. However, considerations about biobanks are grounded in a broader scope related to the use of the human body and its fragments in scientific research and medical practice, such as: anthropology and ontology of the human body, corporeality in relation to person identity, transhumanism, transplantation, donation of corpses for research and teaching purposes. The monograph was published as one of the activities under task 6 (ELSI) related to the project “Establishing a network of biobanks in Poland within the Research Infrastructure of Biobanks and Biomolecular Resources BBMRI-ERIC” financed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education Republic of Poland. The monograph was published in the open-access system in Polish language with English abstracts following chapters. You can download it here.
