BBMRI.pl is a new initiative in Poland which has been a full Member of BBMRI-ERIC since autumn 2016. The National Node is located at the Lukasiewicz Research Center – PORT, Polish Center for Technology Development. With a population of over 38.5 million people, the Polish Node is currently mapping all biobanking activities in the country.
The ongoing operations of BBMRI.pl include:
- Building a national network of biobanks and serving as a link to BBMRI-ERIC; 49 biobanks have joined the Polish Biobanking Network as members or observers since 2017
- Standardising all sample procedures as well as data collection and storage
- Establishing a common IT infrastructure
- Building a National Biobanking Node
- Introducing quality control standards for all biobanks joining the network
- Analysing ethical, legal and societal needs related to research on human biological material
- Initiating cooperation with other European biobanks
- Promoting the idea of biobanking human samples for scientific purposes among the public
